What Does Hockey Wax Do?

Hockey stick wax creates a protective layer over the cloth tape on your blade. On the ice, that layer helps repel moisture, reduce snow and ice buildup and slow the breakdown of your tape job.

With less frozen buildup sitting on the blade, your tape can keep a cleaner, more consistent feel throughout the skate. The right wax also helps keep wet tape from softening and wearing out as quickly.

Hard Hockey Wax vs. Soft Hockey Wax

Soft hockey wax is popular because it adds tack. The tradeoff is that the same softness can create a stickier coating, transfer more easily to hands or gear and wear away faster depending on the formula and ice conditions.

A hard hockey wax prioritizes a firmer, cleaner coating and slower wear. It still gives the tape a moisture-resistant layer, but without relying on a heavy, gummy feel.

How to Apply Hockey Wax

1. Start with a dry, freshly taped hockey stick blade.

2. Rub Snow Shield directly across the front and back of the tape using firm, even passes.

3. Apply a light, even layer, paying extra attention to the bottom edge where the blade meets the ice.

4. Reapply when the coating has worn down or snow begins collecting on the tape again.
